Adding an additional driver to a trip allows another person to share the driving responsibilities. This article explains the requirements additional drivers must meet, the associated fees, and the primary driver's responsibilities.

## Allowing additional drivers on your trip

Guests can add up to 8 additional drivers to a trip at any time after booking, including while a trip is in progress.

Additional drivers **must**:

* [Get approved](https://help.turo.com/en_us/booking-a-car-H1gxVVeE9) to drive on Turo
* Have **or** [create their own Turo account](https://turo.com/sign-up) using an email **NOT** associated with any other Turo account
* Meet Turo’s age and license requirements in the country where your trip takes place ([US](https://help.turo.com/booking-a-car-H1gxVVeE9), [Australia](https://help.turo.com/booking-a-car-australia-HkhqNcD0a), [Canada](https://help.turo.com/booking-a-car-canada-ByHbS9wRT), [France](https://help.turo.com/booking-a-car-france-SJgUrcDAp), [UK](https://help.turo.com/booking-a-car-uk-HJHcScP0p))
* Meet Turo’s [age requirements for the vehicle class](https://help.turo.com/deluxe-class-and-super-deluxe-class-eligibility-Syv7H4lV5); more expensive cars have higher age requirements

## Additional driver fee

* **Cost:** Adding additional drivers costs $5\*/day, capped at $25\* per trip, charged once they’re added.

    * Turo calculates the fee based on the trip's full length, not the number of days remaining when the driver is added, so a driver added on the last day of a 5-day trip is charged the same as one added on day one.

* **Refund if no driver is approved:** If a guest requests to add additional drivers but none are approved by the end of the trip, Turo automatically refunds the fee to the original payment method.

## Understanding your responsibilities as the primary driver

**As the primary driver, you assume all financial responsibility for the vehicle during the trip.**

**You must be the one to pick up and return the vehicle**. If you send an additional driver to pick up the vehicle, your host will refuse them access and report the issue as a [guest no-show](https://help.turo.com/failing-to-show-up-for-a-trip-HJUfENeVq). **If you allow anyone who was not approved by Turo to drive, we’ll void your protection plan.**

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I make my additional driver the primary driver on my trip?

Neither Turo nor your host can change the primary driver on a trip. You can cancel your trip and have your additional driver rebook. For details on trip refund eligibility, review Turo’s [Cancellation policy](https://turo.com/policies/cancellation).

### Can I prevent an additional driver from seeing trip details?

Once approved, the additional driver will see the trip in their Trips tab, including the vehicle, trip dates, and pickup/return location and time. They'll also see a reminder that the primary driver must be present for pickup and return. They will not see the primary driver’s personal or financial information.

### Can my additional driver pick up or return the vehicle?

The primary driver must be the one to pick up and return the vehicle. If you send an additional driver to pick up the vehicle, your host will refuse them access, report the issue, and Turo will charge you as a [guest no-show](https://help.turo.com/failing-to-show-up-for-a-trip-HJUfENeVq). If they return the vehicle, your host can report the incident to Turo.

### Can my additional driver report vehicle damage?

No. Only the primary driver can report damage to Turo. If an additional driver notices an issue, they should tell the primary driver, who can report it.

### How can I add myself to a trip as an additional driver?

The primary driver must initiate the request to add an additional driver to a trip.

### My additional driver doesn’t have a Turo account. Can we share an account?

Drivers can’t share a Turo account. Additional drivers must have their own Turo accounts created with an email not used by any other Turo account.

### Do I need to be in the car at all times when my additional driver is driving?

The primary driver doesn't need to be in the car when the additional driver is driving. However, the additional driver is not permitted to pick up the vehicle at the start of a trip or to return the vehicle at the end of the trip.

### My additional driver is old enough to rent and drive a car with Turo. Why were they denied due to age requirements?

If we didn’t approve your additional driver because of their age, it could be because you booked a vehicle that has [higher age requirements due to its market value](https://help.turo.com/deluxe-class-and-super-deluxe-class-eligibility-Syv7H4lV5).

### My additional driver is under 25 years old. Will I have to pay a young driver fee?

No. Only the primary driver pays the young driver fee.

### Does Turo refund the additional driver fee if a guest cancels the trip?

If a guest cancels a refundable trip before it starts, Turo refunds the additional driver fee to their original payment method. If the guest cancels a non-refundable trip more than 24 hours after booking and Turo approved the additional driver, Turo does not refund the fee. If a host or Turo cancels the trip and you do not use the original funds to rebook, Turo always refunds the additional driver fee, regardless of trip type.

### What happens to the additional driver fee if a guest rebooks after a cancellation?

If a trip cancellation occurs and a guest rebooks a different vehicle, Turo refunds the original additional driver fee, and the guest must invite the additional driver on the new trip and pay the fee again.

### My additional driver did not get my invitation to join the trip. Why not?

The additional driver should check their messages (including spam/junk folders) for the invite link. If they still cannot find it, the primary driver can return to the trip's **Details** page and resend the link at any time.
