## Primary and additional drivers

The guest who booked the trip in your vehicle is the **primary driver**. They’re financially responsible for anything that happens during the trip. That includes any incidents, damage, or violations caused by their additional driver.

Someone else Turo has approved to drive on the trip is an **additional driver**. We’ll notify you when we approve an additional driver and display that driver’s name on the **Details** page of the trip.

## Driver permissions

**The primary guest must be the one to pick up and return your vehicle.**

Don’t give your vehicle to anyone who’s not listed as the trip’s primary driver. Doing so will void the protection tied to your earnings plan. Contact customer support and **report it as a guest no-show.** Tap the **“Get help”** button below to reach our AI assistant and ask to be connected to an agent.

## Additional driver approval

Additional drivers must meet Turo’s [eligibility requirements](https://help.turo.com/booking-a-car-H1gxVVeE9), have their own Turo account, and successfully pass Turo’s verification process to be approved as a driver.

Hosts are not able to approve an additional driver. If a guest asks you to, send them these [instructions](https://help.turo.com/adding-a-driver-to-a-trip-HksENgV5) for adding a driver to a trip. **Giving verbal consent or otherwise allowing an unapproved driver to drive your vehicle will void your protection plan.**

## Frequently asked questions

#### My guest wants to make their additional driver the primary driver. How do they do that?

**If a guest wants to change the primary driver on a trip, they must cancel and have the new primary driver rebook the trip**. The primary driver is fully financially responsible for your vehicle while on a trip. They must pay for the trip, and Turo must have a payment method in the primary driver’s name — they may not use anyone else’s payment method — for the trip.

#### An additional driver came to pick up the car? Should I give it to them?

**Only give your vehicle to the trip’s primary driver, never to an additional driver.** If you do, Turo will void your protection tied to your earnings plan. Instead, **report the trip as a** [**guest no-show**](https://help.turo.com/guest-no-shows-SkNzL4g4q).

#### My guest booked the trip for someone else. Can they make them the primary driver?

Turo doesn’t permit guests to book a trip for someone else. The trip must be booked by the intended primary driver so Turo can confirm their eligibility and payment method.

#### Do I have to confirm the licenses of the additional drivers?

Since the primary driver assumes all financial responsibility, **you don’t need to confirm driver’s license information from additional drivers at check-in**.

#### The person who booked the trip uploaded a license belonging to one of the additional drivers. Should I still deliver the car?

The primary driver must upload **_their_** driver’s license at check-in. **Don’t accept and don’t move forward with a trip if the license sent to you at check-in belongs to an additional driver.**

#### There’s an unapproved driver driving my car. What do I do?

If an unapproved driver is driving your car, use Turo messaging to remind the primary driver that only approved additional drivers are allowed to drive. Tell them they must either request to add the driver via Turo — they can do so while their trip is in progress — or no longer allow the unapproved person to drive. If you don’t receive notice that the driver has been added to the trip, report the issue to customer support.

#### An additional driver returned my car. What do I do?

Report the issue to customer support.
