Annual safety inspections
Depending on your location, your vehicle may need to meet Turo’s safety requirements when you list and each year it’s active on our platform.
Annual safety requirements
Locations
- Canada: Hosts must get an annual vehicle safety inspection from a qualified mechanic
- United Kingdom: Hosts must confirm annual vehicle servicing and pass a MOT test where required
- US: Hosts, with the exception of those in the states listed below, must get an annual vehicle safety inspection from a qualified mechanic
Exceptions: We don’t require inspections from vehicles registered in these states: Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia
Turo doesn’t require hosts in the following locations to have an annual safety inspection:
- Australia
- France
Inspections
You may use a virtual inspection vendor to conduct your vehicle’s annual inspection. However, you must take your vehicle in person to a physical shop for a new inspection and possible battery replacement if the virtual inspector:
- can’t determine if the battery is fewer than five years old
- determines the battery is five years or older and you’re unable to perform a 12v multimeter test during the inspection
Listing safety requirements
New York hosts must have an inspection sticker that’s valid through at least the following month to list a vehicle (Ex. If a host lists their car in June, the inspection sticker must be valid through July). New York hosts must:
- Upload a clear photo showing both rectangular registration tag and square inspection sticker on your vehicle
- Enter expiration date as shown on square inspection sticker — for example, you’d enter “January 2023” for the yellow sticker shown in this image.
Due dates
Inspection due dates depend on your vehicle listing. Go to your vehicle listing and open the Safety inspections tab for date notification.
- Listed vehicles in states other than New York and in Canada have their next annual inspection due 12 months, at month end, from the date of previous inspection
- Listed vehicles in New York must submit proof of inspection within seven days before the end of the month in which the inspection expires
- New listings with a model year newer than or equal to previous calendar year have an inspection due date at month’s end 12 months after listing date
- All other new listings have an inspection due date at month’s end six months after listing date
Missed dates
- Listed vehicles in states other than New York and in Canada – We’ll remove your vehicle from search if you miss the inspection due date
- Listed vehicles in New York – We’ll restrict your vehicle to prevent new bookings and cancel any trips booked between the 1st and the 14th of the following month. If the inspection still isn’t updated within 14 days, we'll cancel all remaining trips.
