This article outlines the specific requirements you must meet to successfully book a car in Canada, including location, age, and accepted driver's licenses. Review these essential criteria to ensure a smooth booking process for your next trip.

## Booking requirements in Canada

You must meet the following criteria to successfully book a car in Canada. If you’re booking a car in another country, check the requirements for the [US](https://help.turo.com/H1gxVVeE9), [Australia](https://help.turo.com/HkhqNcD0a), [France](https://help.turo.com/SJgUrcDAp), or the [UK](https://help.turo.com/HJHcScP0p).

## Location and account basics

* **Trip Origin:** Your trip must start in one of the Canadian provinces or territories where Turo operates: Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, or the Yukon.

* **Account:** You do not need to have a Turo account to book a car.

* **Insurance:** You do not need to provide your own insurance to book a car.

## Age requirements

Your required minimum age depends on the vehicle class and considers your age **at the time you book**, not at the time the trip takes place.

* **Standard vehicles:** You must be **23 or older** at the time of booking.

* **Deluxe Class vehicles:** You must be **25 or older.**

* **Super Deluxe Class, Classic, or Specialty vehicles:** You must be **30 or older.**

## Accepted driver's licenses

Before each trip, you’ll upload photos of your license to you host for confirmation, or, if you’re meeting your host in-person at the start of the trip, you’ll present your license at that time. You must have a physical copy **(not a digital copy)** of one of the following license types.

**Permanent license**

* A permanent valid license issued in Canada that grants full driving privileges

* A permanent valid license issued by your home country

**Note for drivers with a license issued outside of Canada:** Check the legal requirements in the province where you’re booking your trip because you may also need an [International Driving Permit (IDP)](https://help.turo.com/temporary-licenses-and-international-driver's-permits-HkOgVExE9). **An IDP cannot be used as a replacement for your primary license.**

**Temporary license**

* A temporary license (aka temporary driving permit) must be valid from the start of the trip through the end.

* You must also present a second government photo ID where the first name, last name, and date of birth match the temporary license exactly.

**Probationary license (“permis probatoire”)**

* This license is accepted only for Quebec drivers.

* This license must have your photo; if it doesn’t, you must also present another form of government photo ID.

**Turo does NOT accept:**

* Expired, altered, conditional, provisional, restricted, or probational licenses (except those issued in Quebec)

* Learner's permits or instruction permits (e.g., G1 in Ontario or L in British Columbia)

*   Photocopy of a license

* International Driving License or similar document purchased online and translated

* International Driving Permit (IDP) as a replacement for a license

## Checkout steps

**Information required at checkout**

To book your first trip, you'll enter the following information at checkout:

*   **

    **First and last name**

    **
* **Email address** (must not be tied to another Turo account)

* **Phone number** (must accept text messages)

* **Payment method** (payment card, Apple Wallet, or Google Wallet) to cover any post-trip incidental costs or vehicle damage you may be responsible for; check the [payment methods Turo accepts](https://help.turo.com/en_us/payment-methods-turo-accepts-B1kfEutwee)

**Booking and cancellation notes**

* We’ll send you an email confirmation once your trip is booked.

* You can cancel at no cost within our [free cancellation period](https://turo.com/us/en/policies/cancellation).

* **Overlap rule:** You can only book one vehicle at a time; the dates and times of a new trip cannot overlap with any existing booking.

## Post-booking steps

**If your driver's license is expired or will expire while your trip is in progress,** you must provide an updated license before the trip starts. This is a required checklist item, and you **must complete this no later than two hours before your scheduled trip start time** to avoid cancellation.
