This article outlines requirements for booking a car in the United States, including minimum age criteria, accepted driver's licenses, and details on the young driver fee. Use this information to understand required checkout details and to follow post-booking steps.

## General requirements and other locations

You must meet the following criteria to successfully book a car in the United States. If you’re booking a car in another country, check the requirements for [Australia](https://help.turo.com/HkhqNcD0a), [Canada](https://help.turo.com/ByHbS9wRT), [France](https://help.turo.com/SJgUrcDAp), or the [UK](https://help.turo.com/HJHcScP0p).

## Account and insurance basics

* **Account:** You do not need to have a Turo account to book a car.

* **Insurance:** You do not need to provide your own insurance to book a car.

## Age requirements

Your required minimum age depends on the vehicle class and considers your age **at the time you book**, not at the time the trip takes place.

**Vehicle class**

**Minimum age**

Standard vehicle

**18 or older**

Vehicle with a total market value of more than $20k

**21 or older**

**25 or older**

[Super Deluxe Class](https://help.turo.com/deluxe-class-and-super-deluxe-class-eligibility-Syv7H4lV5), Classic, or Specialty vehicle

**30 or older**

## Young driver fee

If you are a driver **between the ages of 18 and 24**, you must pay a young driver fee.

* The fee is calculated based on your age at the time of booking (not the trip start date).

* It varies depending on trip length and other factors.

* This fee cannot be excused or refunded once your trip is completed.

## Accepted licenses

Before each trip, you’ll upload photos of your license to your host for confirmation, or, if you’re meeting your host in-person at the start of the trip, you’ll present your license at that time. You must have a physical copy **(not a digital copy)** of one of the following license types.

**Permanent license**

* A permanent valid license issued in the United States that grants full driving privileges.

* A permanent valid license issued by your home country.

**Temporary license or interim license**

* This license must be valid at the start and through the end of your trip.

* If the temporary license has no photo, it must be accompanied by another government photo ID on which your first name, last name, and date of birth match the license exactly.

**Turo does NOT accept:**

* Expired, altered, conditional, provisional, restricted, or probational licenses

*   Learner’s permit/instruction permit

*   Photocopy of a license

* International Driving License/Document purchased online and translated in English

* International Driving Permit (IDP) as a replacement for a license

## Checkout steps

**Information required at checkout**

To book your first trip, you will need to enter the following information:

*   **First and last name**

* **Email address:** (must not be tied to any other Turo account)

* **Phone number:** (phone must accept text messages)

* **Payment method:** (payment card, Apple Wallet, or Google Wallet) to cover any post-trip incidental costs or vehicle damage you may be responsible for; check the [payment methods Turo accepts](https://help.turo.com/en_us/payment-methods-turo-accepts-B1kfEutwee)

**Booking and cancellation notes**

* We’ll send you an email confirmation once your trip is booked.

* You can cancel at no cost within our [free cancellation period](https://turo.com/us/en/policies/cancellation).

* **Overlap rule:** You can only book one vehicle at a time; the dates and times of a new trip cannot overlap with any existing booking.

## Post-booking steps

The steps required depend on your booking lead time:

* **Short lead time (Less than 3 hours lead time):** We’ll ask you to verify your phone number and enter your driver’s license information during checkout. We’ll also prompt you to add or decline protection before your trip begins.

* **Standard booking (More than 3 hours lead time):** For your first trip, you’ll complete a few quick post-booking tasks: confirming your phone number, uploading or verifying your license, and adding or declining protection.

* Although you may be prompted to verify your license using Apple Wallet or Google Wallet in the app, remember you must use a **physical license** when [checking in](https://help.turo.com/en_us/checking-in-for-a-trip-HkZfVVe49) for your trip.

**Important deadline:**

* If your license is expired or will expire while your trip is in progress, you must provide an updated copy before the trip starts.

We’ll display a checklist and send regular reminders. **You must complete all tasks no later than two hours before your trip is scheduled to start, or the trip will be canceled**.
