You must confirm the driver's license before the trip begins. Failure to do so may result in the protection tied to your earnings plan being voided. Do not allow the guest to access the vehicle if you have not been able to verify their driving license or identity. Do not allow anyone other than the primary guest to access the vehicle, not even an additional driver.

## How to confirm a license

#### Checking license information

You must complete license confirmation before a trip starts; otherwise, you risk having your protection plan voided. To confirm a license, check the following:

* Name on the license matches the reservation information of the primary guest; if there’s a minor name mismatch but all other information matches or shows the license to be eligible, you can confirm the license

* Date of birth on the license matches the reservation information of the primary guest

* Guest’s face matches the photo on their license

* License is a physical license; Turo doesn’t accept digital licenses

* License indicates the guest has at least one year of driving experience; for Deluxe vehicles the guest must be at least 25 years old; for Super Deluxe the guest must be at least 30 years old

* License hasn’t expired and will be active for the duration of the scheduled trip

* License hasn’t been altered and isn’t conditional, probational, provisional, restricted, or a learner’s permit

#### Accepting an international license

**You may accept an international license,** that is, a license that was issued by a country outside of the country where the trip begins. Apply the same checks as you would to a license that’s been issued in the UK. Do not accept an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a substitute for a driver’s license, it is needed in addition to the driving license.

**If a guest checks in with an non-UK,** and they have held that valid permanent license from their home country for at least one year, they have the right to drive in the UK using this license for up to one year or five years, depending on where the license was issued. So if they are a visitor (i.e. not a resident of the UK) there is no issue. [Check which rule applies here](https://www.gov.uk/driving-nongb-licence).

#### Temporary license are not accepted

You may not accept a temporary license.

#### When to allow a minor name mismatch

If you find a minor mismatch when confirming the name on the guest’s license but all other information matches or shows the license to be eligible, you can confirm the license.

#### Acceptable minor name mismatches

* Use of a common nickname or initials on their profile but not on the license (e.g., Mike/Michael; Kim/Kimberly; JR Turner/John Robert Turner)

* Multiple names on a license but not on their profile (e.g., Sarah Michelle Smith Johnson/Michelle Smith)

* Minor differences in spelling or formatting (e.g., Ana/Anna; John Smith/John A. Smith)

* Minor differences in the use of accent marks or in formatting (e.g., José/Jose; Van Der Berg/Vanderberg)

## When to get help confirming a license

Contact us with concerns about license authenticity or ownership or if a guest with an expired license requests a military exemption. Turo’s customer support team can help.

#### License authenticity concerns

* Blurry, cropped, or low-quality license photos; ask the guest to send new photos, but contact us if there are still issues

* Signs of tampering, such as uneven text, mismatched fonts, altered DOB or expiration

* License appears printed (not including paper temporary license); ask the guest to send new photos but contact us if there are still issues

* Information on the license doesn’t align visually (photo, name, or layout looks off)

* The license looks unusual; the formatting is unclear, it’s missing details, or you don’t see anything like it when checking available online resources

#### License ownership concerns

* Facial features, age, or general appearance of the person pictured in the license photo is inconsistent with the profile photo or in-person appearance of the primary driver

* Guest says they go by their middle name instead of their first name, but their middle name doesn’t appear on their license

* Legitimate explanation for name change (marriage, divorce, etc.) but date of birth doesn’t match

* Both the first and last name that appear on the license are different from the first and last name of the guest; no need to contact us — cancel the trip

## Frequently asked questions

#### The guest submitted the license of an additional driver instead of their own. Is that OK?

Only confirm and accept the license for the primary driver on a trip. The primary driver is the one who’s financially responsible for your vehicle during the trip, so it’s important that you confirm their license. If your guest wants an additional driver to become the primary driver on the trip, they must cancel the trip and have the additional driver rebook it.

#### The guest covered up their license number and address. Is that allowed?

We allow guests to cover up the license number and their address to protect their privacy. If a primary guest submits a license photo that has this information blacked out, covered up, or otherwise obscured, you should accept the license as long as it meets all other confirmation checks.
