Hosts have 2 ways to grant guests vehicle access without meeting in person: remote-unlock technology or a lockbox. This article covers remote access methods, secure key-transfer steps, and some location-specific rules.

## Approved methods for granting remote vehicle access

### Remote unlock technology

Many newer vehicles have built-in locking and unlocking mechanisms that connect to a manufacturer or third-party mobile app. If the host uses a compatible vehicle app, they can offer remote check-in and check-out.

Here are some apps that may support remote access: [The Mercedes-Benz app,](https://www.mbusa.com/en/mercedes-benz-app) [FordPass](https://www.ford.com/support/category/fordpass/)™, [myHyundai app,](https://www.hyundai.com/eu/en/driving-hyundai/owning-a-hyundai/discover-myhyundai-app.html) [Kia Connect,](https://owners.kia.com/us/en/about-uvo-link.html) [Tesla app,](https://www.tesla.com/dl/energy_demo_app) [Toyota app,](https://www.toyota.com/connected-services/toyota-app/) [HondaLink®\* app](https://automobiles.honda.com/clarity/modals/benefits/hondalink), [MyMazda app,](https://mymazda.com/MyMazda/mazdaConnectedServices.action) [My BMW app](https://www.bmwusa.com/my-bmw-app.html), [myChevrolet app](https://www.chevrolet.com/support/vehicle/smartphone-connections/mychevrolet-mobile-app/remote-commands), and more.

**Important:** Even when using this technology, Turo requires hosts to provide guests a physical key. Place the key out of sight inside an RF-blocking pouch so the vehicle stays locked and only the verified guest can access it.

### Lockboxes

A lockbox is a secure, combination-locked container that can be mounted to or near the vehicle to hold the key. If the host uses a lockbox, they can share the access code with the guest after verification for check-in and check-out without needing to meet in person.

Follow these instructions to minimize risk when providing keys to guests remotely through a lockbox.

1. Select a lockbox from a highly rated provider.

2. Place fob-style keys inside an RF pouch.

3. Lock the key inside the lockbox at the pickup location.

4. Change the combination before every trip — never reuse the same code across reservations.

5. Confirm the guest's identity as part of the check-in process; never share a lockbox combination or unlock code before doing so.

6. Send the combination and unlocking instructions via Turo messaging; do not rely on scheduled messages in case identity confirmation fails.

**US hosts** get 20% off 1 to 4 lockboxes or 33% off 5 or more by ordering from [Olympus Lock](https://carhostlocks.com/) with promo code **TUROKEY**.

## RF signal-blocking pouches

A radio frequency (RF) pouch blocks communication between a vehicle and its key fob, preventing thieves from copying the signal and accessing the vehicle.

Keep fob-style keys in the RF pouch at all times — and instruct guests to do the same — to block unauthorized signals and prevent interference with manufacturer remote access.

## Prohibited key locations

Never leave a key in any of the following locations, or anywhere else it's unsecured, openly accessible, or hidden on or near the vehicle. If hosts do and the vehicle is stolen or damaged, Turo will not cover the claim.

* **Wheels:** Wheel wells or tire tops.

* **Fuel/Charge area:** Gas caps, fuel door areas, or charging ports.

*   **Windshields:** Under windshield wipers.

* **Vehicle exterior:** Unsecured anywhere on the exterior, including bumpers and body panel gaps.

* **Surrounding area:** Doormats or planters at the pickup location.

Never leave the vehicle unlocked with keys unsecured inside, including but not limited to these locations:

*   In the cup holder.

*   In the ignition.

*   On the seat.

## Key transfer risks

* **Theft risk:** If you're not using a lockbox handoff or remote unlocking through an app paired with an RF-blocking pouch, your key exchange method likely leaves the vehicle vulnerable to theft.
* **Verification risk:** If the key is exchanged in a way that doesn't use a lockbox or remote unlocking technology, it creates risk because Turo can't verify who accessed the vehicle. This can affect claim eligibility if the vehicle is stolen.

* **Claims and reimbursement risk:** Hosts who don't transfer keys securely risk having their earnings plan voided and losing eligibility for claims and reimbursement.

## Location-specific rules

### Australia

Do not use a window-mounted lockbox — Turo does not consider them secure for Australian hosts. Use an alternative method instead: an indoor lockbox, a smart lock, or an in-person key transfer.

**Important:** Turo may not accept claims or late return investigations from Australian hosts who do not follow this guidance.

### LAX Budget Lot

The LAX Budget Lot does not allow lockboxes. Hosts operating at this location must use manufacturer remote-unlock technology instead.

**Important:** Noncompliance can result in an airport suspension and/or violation fees.
