This article provides steps for returning a vehicle and completing the trip checkout process. Following these instructions helps guests avoid fees and ensures accurate trip documentation. This article does not cover disputing damage charges, requesting roadside assistance, payment disputes, or fee inquiries.

## Requirements for completing a proper return

Guests must perform all listed, required actions to complete a proper return and avoid a $50\* improper return fee:

1.  **Follow host instructions:** Return the vehicle to the location and in the manner specified by your host, provided those instructions do not violate any Turo policies or posted restrictions.
    
2.  **Return on time:** Return the vehicle at the trip's scheduled end time or request an extension in the Turo app.

    1.  **Airports where Turo holds a permit:** Return to one of the approved locations shown on your trip’s **Details** page. Hosts may not require an in-person return or restrict you to specific parking lots and spaces.
        
    2.  **Garages/lots:** Share a photo and the space/section number with your host.
        
    3.  **Street parking:** Ensure the spot is safe and legal for the next 24 hours.
        
4.  **Secure the vehicle & keys:** 
    
    1.  **Abandonment:** Do not abandon the vehicle.
        
    2.  **Key return:** Close the key bag, if provided, and deposit keys in the host's specified location. 
        
    3.  **Security:** Close and secure any lockboxes. 
        
    4.  **Unresponsive hosts:** If the host is unresponsive, document the key location with a photo and message them immediately.
        
    5.  **Locking:** Lock all doors (unless otherwise instructed). 
        
5.  **Respond on time:** Reply to messages to return the vehicle within 2 hours of the end of the trip.
    

## Instructions for checking out and ending your trip

After you complete a proper return of the vehicle, you can check out. Open the Turo app and follow the prompts to take photos that Turo will review in case of a disagreement between you and your host regarding post-trip charges. Take photos of the:

*   condition of the vehicle’s exterior
    
*   condition of the vehicle’s interior
    
*   fuel or charge level
    
*   mileage
    

Completing checkout successfully ends your trip.
