## Policy

Turo follows the law in making a distinction between service and assistance animals and pets (non-service animals). Turo allows service and assistance animals, as defined by law, in any vehicle on the platform.

We recommend that **_before you book_** you read the definitions for service animals in the [US and](https://www.ada.gov/service_animals_2010.htm) [Canada](https://www.servicedogscanada.org/) and for assistance animals in [Australia](https://humanrights.gov.au/our-work/disability-rights/projects/assistance-animals-and-disability-discrimination-act-1992-cth), [France](https://help.turo.com/fr/reglement-sur-les-animaux-de-compagnie-et-dassistance-or-invites-H1Y0N4eVq), and in the [UK](https://www.assistancedogs.org.uk/the-law/). We encourage guests with service and assistance animals to book vehicles labeled “pet friendly"; however, all vehicles on Turo are open to guests traveling with service or assistance animals. Guests traveling with service or assistance animals are not required to use a crate/carrier while in the vehicle.

Pets, including animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support, don’t qualify as service or assistance animals. If you’re traveling with a pet (non-service animal), filter your search to find and book a vehicle labeled “pet friendly.” If you can’t book a “pet friendly” vehicle, use Turo messaging to ask for your host’s written permission to bring a pet. We require that pets be in a crate/carrier while in the vehicle.

## Violations

We’ll charge guests who violate our service animal and pet policy a **[Cleaning policy violation fee](https://support.turo.com/hc/articles/360000808347-Cleaning-and-disinfection-policy-Guests)** for:

* transporting a pet that isn’t a service or assistance animal in a vehicle that isn’t “pet friendly” without approval
* returning the car with a significant amount of animal hair
* return the car with a cleaning issue that could have only been caused by irresponsible or abusive behavior
