## Using an International Driving Permit (IDP)

In some cases, Turo requires you to have an International Driving Permit in addition to a valid permanent license when you book a trip in a country outside your home country.

#### Trips in the US

If you book a trip in the US but have a license issued by a country outside the US, Turo requires you to have a valid permanent license issued by your home country. You’re not required to also have an International Driving Permit (IDP), and an IDP can’t be used in place of a license. 

#### Trips in Australia

If you book a trip in Australia but have a license issued by a country outside of Australia, Turo requires you to have a valid permanent license issued by your home country.

If your home country license is not written in English, you must also have an International Driving Permit **_or_** an official English translation of your home country license.  

#### Trips in Canada

If you book a trip in Canada but have a license issued by a country outside of Canada, Turo requires you to have a valid permanent license issued by your home country. Check the provincial legal requirements for drivers as you may also need to have an International Driving Permit (IDP). Note that an IDP can’t be used in place of a license.  

#### Trips in France

If you book a trip in France, you must be of legal driving age in France (17 years or older) AND have held a permanent, valid driver’s license for at least two years. You must have a permanent, valid license that is:

*   written entirely in French; **_OR_** 
*   _officially translated_ entirely to French; **_OR_** 
*   issued by one of the European Economic Area countries; **_OR_** 
*   issued in the United Kingdom; **_OR_** 
*   a valid license issued by your home country that shows you’ve been a fully licensed driver for two or more years; **_and_** an [International Driving Permit (IDP)](https://help.turo.com/temporary-licenses-and-international-driver's-permits-HkOgVExE9)

#### Trips in the UK

Turo requires drivers with a non-UK license who book trips in the UK to hold a valid permanent license from their home country for at least one year. You can drive in the UK using this license for up to one year or five years, depending on where your license was issued. After that, if you reside in the UK and your license wasn’t issued by an EU or EEA member state, you may have to apply for a UK license. ## Getting an International Driving Permit (IDP)

It can take anywhere from a day to several weeks to receive an International Driving Permit. Generally speaking, IDPs are available exclusively through automobile associations (AAA, CAA, FIA/AIT, etc) to both members and non-members.
