This guide covers all required check-in steps, documentation, and vehicle requirements to ensure you have a smooth start to your trip.

## Submit proper documentation

You can begin check-in up to **24 hours before your trip’s scheduled start time**. The first required step is for you, the primary driver, to upload photo documentation of your license and identity. Your license **MUST** be valid at the start and through the end of the trip.

## Why do I need to submit photos of my license again?

While you entered your license information when you created your account, these photos confirm your license is valid for the trip and that you are the primary driver. This is essential for the security of our platform and your host.

**Important Deadline:**

If you’re a guest in the US and didn’t upload your driver's license when you booked, you must upload it **up to two hours before your trip starts**. Failure to do so will result in Turo canceling your trip.

**Accepted licenses:**

**Acceptable license types**

**Requirements**

Physical, permanent license

Issued by the government of your country of residence

Temporary/interim license

Issued in the US or Canada and accepted for trips in the US and Canada only. This is a paper document allowing you to legally drive until you receive your permanent license.

**Requirements for Temporary Licenses:**

* **US trips:** License must have been issued in the US or Canada and include your photo. If there’s no photo, you must present an additional government photo ID.

* **Canada trips:** License must include your photo **AND** you must also present an additional government photo ID.

**Country-specific requirements:**

* **France:** License must indicate you’ve been a driver for **two years or more**. Non-EU license holders must also present an International Driving Permit (IDP) **OR** an official French translation of their non-EU license.

* **UK:** License must indicate that you’ve been a driver for **one year or more**.

**Unacceptable license types:**

Your trip will be canceled if you use these:

* Licenses that are expired, altered, conditional, probational, provisional, restricted, or probational (with the exception of probational licenses issued France or in Quebec for trips in Canada)

* Digital format, photocopy, or a photo/screenshot of your license.

* International Driving License/Document purchased online and translated.

* International Driving Permit (IDP) used as a replacement for a license.

* Learner’s permits or instructional permits.

**Cancellation warning:** If you fail to present a valid physical license to your host for your trip, **we will cancel the trip** and may issue you a partial refund.

## Upload required check-in photos

You will be prompted in the app to upload specific identification photos. We’ll also show you how to hide sensitive information in the images.

**Privacy note:** Submit identity photos **only** during check-in. Do **not** add them to your Trip Photos unless a Verification agent instructs you to. Hosts cannot view or save these images once the check-in window closes.

**Photo requirements:**

1. Close-up of your driver's license:

    * Submit a clear, close-up photo with all four corners of your license visible.

    * **If you are using a temporary license,** include your expired license or another government-issued photo ID in the picture with your temporary license.

2. Selfie with license:

    * Upload a selfie holding your driver's license next to your face.

    * Ensure your head and shoulders are visible, and your face is clearly seen (no hats or sunglasses).![](https://cdn.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/60635efd752cda7eb92e47b2/f5002189d59574dd2c8b3285e6cf32ba.png)

**For in-person pickup:** If you meet your host, you **must** present the **physical, current, valid license** you uploaded as photo documentation. Your host cannot accept a photo, screenshot, or digital driver’s license.

## Collect keys and document vehicle condition

**Key collection:**

Your host must either personally hand you the keys or provide you with access to them, even if the vehicle uses remote locking technology. If they don’t, contact us for help.

**Vehicle inspection and photos:**

Before you start your trip, verify that the car meets legal requirements, is safe to drive, and is clean.

* **Document condition:** Use the Turo app to take and upload time-stamped photos. Follow the [guidelines](https://help.turo.com/trip-photos-guide-or-guests-HytcE4g49) to clearly document all areas of the vehicle.

* **Protection:** Taking pre-trip photos is essential. They protect you against claims of pre-existing damage, cleaning/smoking issues, or inaccurate invoices for post-trip incidental costs.

**Safety warning:** If the car is unsafe or unsatisfactory, **do not complete check-in** and contact customer support immediately.

**To connect with a support agent:** Tap the "Get help" button below and ask the AI assistant to connect you.

## Early trip start

**Q: Can I pick up the car early?**

**A:** Yes, if your host and the vehicle are ready **and** you both agree. You can complete check-in and start your trip up to **one hour** before the scheduled start time.

**Requirement for early trip start:** You **must** complete the entire check-in process in the app for an early trip start to be valid.
