#### Learn about Turo’s requirements for collecting value-added tax (VAT) in France.

## Value-added tax (VAT) collection

#### Professional hosts

Professional hosts are hosts who’ve registered as a business and have provided Turo with documentation identifying themselves as a business. Since Turo is not an EU entity, it’s not required to collect value-added tax (VAT) for trips taken in vehicles listed by Professional hosts. This is true whether the guest is from inside or outside of France. Hosts are responsible for submitting a VAT return to the French Fiscal Administration  and remitting the appropriate VAT amount under the applicable self-assessments rules.

#### Hosts

Turo is required to collect value-added tax (VAT) from non-Professional Hosts. If you haven't provided Turo with documentation identifying yourself as a business, we’ll consider that you aren’t a Professional Host. In this case, we’ll apply the French VAT rate to the Turo fee on trips with your vehicles listed in France and booked by guests from inside or outside of France. VAT is calculated at 20% of the Turo fee.

If at any time you choose to register your business and receive a SIREN, you can [update your business status](https://turo.com/business-status).

## Earnings statement

VAT appears as a separate line item on your Trip receipt for each transaction. Access your Trip receipt from the **Details** page of a trip or via your **Transaction History**. If you submit a reimbursement invoice for [additional distance](https://help.turo.com/charging-mileage-costs-for-additional-distance-Hy5uBEeE5), additional usage, or late fees, tax applied to this payment amount will show as a separate line item on your receipt. To find a breakdown of VAT deducted from your earnings, refer to trip receipts, [download the trip earnings CSV, or view the tax information page](https://help.turo.com/viewing-your-earnings-HyFwSVeNq), currently updated annually.

As of December 15, 2023, we’ll display host earnings as the amount earned by hosts, minus any services tax or sales tax collected for the trip. This update applies to all current and historic host earnings data.

**Note:** Turo can’t provide advice on tax matters, including refunds; consult your tax professional for advice.

## VAT for repair payouts

If you have Turo handle a claim for vehicle damage, we’ll send you a [list of Turo-approved garages](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OKs4_taf2DS98SOEIpb8Hxp9OH8z5WVi/view?usp=sharing). We’ll apply your host deductible and Turo will pay the garage directly, including VAT. If you take the vehicle to a non-network garage or prefer to receive cash in lieu of repairs, we’ll pay you the net price, excluding VAT, minus your plan’s deductible. If you’re registered as a business, you may be able to claim the VAT back.

**Note:** The list of approved garages is not exhaustive and is subject to change.

## VAT FAQs

**Are the service fees charged by Turo Inc. subject to French VAT?**

The service fees charged by Turo Inc. are subject to French VAT.

**How is this VAT paid?**

If VAT is separately mentioned by Turo Inc. on the receipt, VAT is collected by Turo Inc. along with the service fees. It is then remitted to the tax authorities by Turo Inc.

If VAT is not separately mentioned by Turo Inc. on the receipt, you only have to pay the net amount to Turo Inc. It is then up to you to directly pay the VAT to the tax authorities through the self-assessment procedure. If you already have a VAT number, you need to declare the due tax on your periodic turnover declaration and pay it along with your regular tax obligations. If you do not have a VAT number because you benefit from the VAT relief for small business under Article 293 B of the CGI (therefore you do not charge any VAT for your activities), you are subject to the same regime. To self-assess VAT, you need to request a VAT identification number from your tax office to then file a VAT return. The identification request is made using a special form available from the tax authorities.

For more information on this matter, we encourage you to consult a tax advisor or contact your tax office.

**What happens if I forget to self-assess French VAT on the service fees charged by Turo Inc.?**

Failure to self-assess is sanctioned by a fine of 5% of the due VAT or by interest on arrears, depending on the case. It is possible to regularize your situation voluntarily to limit these sanctions.

For more information on this matter, we encourage you to consult a tax advisor or contact your tax office.
