## Vehicle swaps before a trip

If a booked vehicle is unavailable for a guest’s trip, you can propose a swap into an eligible vehicle before the trip is scheduled to start, and the guest can accept or decline. If the guest accepts the proposal, your payout won’t change even if the replacement vehicle has a different price.

**A replacement vehicle is eligible for a swap** _**if**_**:**

* settings match those of the original vehicle, including delivery options, Extras, mileage, earnings plans, and transmission type

* it’s in the same or a lower [vehicle class](https://help.turo.com/deluxe-class-and-super-deluxe-class-eligibility-Syv7H4lV5) than the original vehicle

* it’s eligible to be booked by the guest based on [age requirements](https://help.turo.com/deluxe-class-and-super-deluxe-class-eligibility-Syv7H4lV5) for drivers

If you don’t have an eligible replacement vehicle, you’ll need to [cancel the trip](https://help.turo.com/canceling-a-trip-with-your-guest-HkkzLVlE5). You can only swap vehicles once before a trip is scheduled to start.

Once you propose a vehicle swap, the replacement vehicle will be unavailable for booking during the trip period, and the original vehicle will be unlisted until you [take steps to relist it](https://help.turo.com/unlisting-or-snoozing-a-vehicle-listing-ryotlwkUq). The trip status will show **Swap pending** until the guest responds. The guest has until the trip’s scheduled start time to accept or decline the proposed vehicle swap.

If the guest accepts the proposal, your payout will remain the same, even if the replacement vehicle has a different price. If the guest declines the proposal, the trip will be canceled.

How the cancellation impacts you depends on whether Turo holds you responsible for being unable to provide the originally booked vehicle. These reasons include, but aren’t limited to, failing to provide routine maintenance and scheduling issues. In cases such as these, Turo will deduct a cancellation fee from your earnings and your performance metrics may be impacted. Turo won’t hold you responsible if the booked vehicle was damaged in a previous trip, required emergency maintenance, wasn’t returned on time, or had a vehicle recall.

## Vehicle swaps during a trip

For vehicle swaps during a trip, whenever possible, choose a replacement vehicle of a similar year, make, and model to the original vehicle.

For replacement vehicles to be eligible for a swap during a trip, swap for a vehicle that is:

* already listed on your account and in good standing on Turo

* the same or lower price than the original vehicle, unless the guest requests a more expensive vehicle

* Deluxe or Super Deluxe only if the original vehicle is a Deluxe or Super Deluxe vehicle

* manual transmission only if the original vehicle has a manual transmission

To swap a vehicle during a trip, your guest must agree to the swap in Turo messaging, and you must contact customer support. Call the number listed below, and we’ll verify the replacement vehicle is eligible and manage the swap for you. Allowing a guest to use a vehicle for which they don’t qualify may void your protection tied to your earnings plan.

Remember to take pre-trip photos of the replacement vehicle before the swap and upload them after the new trip is created. You’ll need these photos to invoice guests for reimbursements and to qualify for damage coverage.

## Frequently asked questions

#### Can I swap my guest into a more expensive vehicle?

If you’re proposing a swap before the trip is scheduled to start, you may propose a more expensive vehicle, but it must be in the same vehicle class as the original vehicle.

If you’re initiating the swap during a trip because of an issue on your end, you can offer a more expensive vehicle, but Turo expects that you’ll match the price of the guest’s original vehicle. The customer support agent managing the swap will ask if you agree to a price match before completing the swap. Turo may review and take action on accounts of hosts who consistently swap guests into more expensive vehicles and refuse to price match.

If your guest requests a swap to a more expensive vehicle during a trip, you can make the swap as long as you’ve clearly communicated the price difference and the guest agrees to the increased price in Turo messaging. However, a replacement vehicle must be in the same class as the original vehicle. For example, you can swap a guest into a Deluxe Class vehicle or a Super Deluxe Class vehicle if the original vehicle was a Deluxe Class or  Super Deluxe Class vehicle.

#### Why can’t my guest book the swapped vehicle?

If a guest can’t book the replacement car, it typically means:

* we’ve placed a hold on their account, and they’re ineligible to book

* they don’t qualify due to a vehicle requirement tied to age or vehicle type
